Alkalize Your Diet and Lose More Weight Easier
Over the years, experience has taught me that there is a whole load more to losing weight than simply limiting the number of calories you intake.
Alkalizing your diet can have a very positive effect on how your body deals with fats in food and also how it works to remove excess stored fat from your body.
So in this article I'll look at why an alkaline diet is not only better for your health but also makes losing that excess weight that much easier.
Sure, I know you could take the easy way by just paying for a meal replacement diet like I explain in my Nutrisystem review article, but this is about taking control over what you eat at a deeper level.
It's more than just being about calories.
It's about eating to be healthy and weigh the right amount. After all, we all want to shed those excess pounds easier so why not do it simply by eating?
Why Alkalize?
You're probably wondering why you should even bother trying to figure out what the point is of switching to a more alkaline diet structure. Well, there are a number of pretty compelling reasons why you should do so:
- A reduced acidity level in the body helps reduce potentially health impacting inflammation. This in turn helps lower the risk of hypertension and stroke, while improving cardiovascular health. It also reduces the instance of chronic pain caused by inflammation.
- Alkaline foods fall mainly into the fresh fruit and vegetable categories. These are the healthiest foods you can eat, containing vitamins and minerals needed for a healthy body.
- The body metabolizes alkaline foods more efficiently producing more energy and storing less fat. It boosts mineral absorption and helps reduce magnesium deficiency, which is a common cause of heart complications, headaches, muscle pains, sleep problems and anxiety. It helps the body produce more vitamin D which is essential for good weight management.
- An alkaline body is inhospitable to cancerous cells. Research published in the British Journal of Radiology (see: PubMed) showed that apoptosis (cancerous cell death) had a greater likelihood of occurring in an alkaline body.
- It helps protect bone density by promoting the balancing of bone building minerals. This includes vitamin D and the body's ability to absorb more calcium from food.
- Eating more alkaline-forming foods in your diet can help protect the body from obesity. It does that by decreasing inflammation and leptin levels, which affect how your body burns fat and experiences hunger. Alkaline-forming foods are therefore anti-inflammatory in nature. By consuming an alkaline diet, your body is given a good chance to achieve normalized leptin levels, while you feel satisfied from eating foods that add up to the number of calories you actually need.
What Foods Are Alkalizing?
As I mentioned above, if you concentrate on eating more fresh fruits and vegetables in your daily diet, you will gradually reduce the overall level of acidity in your body.
The best way to get your fruit and vegetables is to buy organic produce. Why?
Organically grown produce is grown in more nutrient-dense soil, allowing the plants to absorb more of the minerals that you need while increasing their alkalizing ability.
Hate to say it, but the cheap produce on sale in the supermarket comes from intensively farmed crops. They're grown in soil stripped of its nutrients by consecutive years of over-farming and they're laced with a cocktail of lethal pesticides, herbicides and fungicides not all of which are ever completely removed by washing.
I don't mean to scare you, but those cheap carrots you bought in the supermarket are probably about as healthy as eating cardboard soaked weedkiller!
OK, that may have been a little dramatic, but sometimes I need to be in order to get the point across. Which is, try and source your produce from organic sellers only. Sure you'll pay more for them, but when it's your health (and your family's health) we're talking about, what is it worth to you?
It's also worth including a number of raw food choices in your meals as raw veggies and fruits contain higher levels of alkalizing properties as well as greater amounts of healthy enzymes that are destroyed by cooking.
So, we know that organic fruit and vegetables are the best source of alkalizing foods. But what should we avoid eating?
What Foods to Avoid?
Just take a walk around any supermarket food section and your senses are assaulted by a barrage of so many different packages of food that it can be overwhelming if you try to take it all in at once. There are rows upon rows of shelves stacked to bursting point with just about everything you could ever imagine cramming into your mouth to eat.
But most of it is anything but healthy and a lot of it is downright unhealthy!
Most people just don't have the time to spend reading the ingredients list on every packet or can of food to see what's in it and whether they should buy it or not. Well, save yourself the headache!
Don't even visit those aisles with shelves stacked with packets or cans of stuff!
Chances are they're going to contain additives or have constituents that are unhealthy and almost certainly acidifying if you eat them. If you want to manage your weight and your health at the same time, forget buying any more packaged, ready-to-eat or junk foods.
With packet foods crossed off the shopping list, what's next to avoid?
Meat, or more especially red meat. "Oh no! You cannot be serious?"
Sorry about that, but I'm afraid I am! Red meat (beef, pork, lamb for example) are all acidifying and what's more they all contain unhealthy levels of growth hormones and antibiotics force-fed to the animals during their short, miserable lives. It stinks, but it's unfortunately true.
If you need to keep meat in your diet, opt for white meat such as chicken and get it from an organic farm and not the supermarket. In fact, if you're going to ignore this advice and keep eating red meat I would advise you to source it from organic farms locally where possible. That way you reduce the levels of unwanted additives in the meat to acceptable levels and you can sleep at night knowing the animals might have at least been able to graze in open fields on real grass before they were slaughtered.
I don't want this to turn into an anti-meat rant because I still eat a little of it myself. Just not as much as I once did. But I have seen how the factory grown meat is produced and you can get those nice images of happy cows grazing in sunny pastures out of your heads right away.
They do not!
The meat you buy in supermarkets comes from factory farms where the animals are kept for their entire short lives in huge buildings that look not unlike long, narrow aircraft hangers. They have little or no room to move around and are fed unnatural "feed" containing growth hormones to force them to grow unnaturally fast to get them to the slaughterhouse in the shortest time possible. In these nightmarish homes, they are injected with antibiotics to stop them getting sick in the unsanitary conditions.
They grow, they die and end up on your plate as acid forming food. That food comes with a payload of all kinds of health issues and illnesses down the road for you if you keep eating high levels of meat that comes from such a source.
OK, back to the point of this article. If you want to alkalize and not acidify, then you're going to need to make some sacrifices in the food you eat. The biggest sacrifice will be to cut down dramatically on your meat intake. Or even stop eating it completely. It won't hurt you but will certainly help you!
Next is to cut out all soda and other sweetened drinks! "Oh no, not that too!"
Yup, that too! All carbonated drinks are acidic and acid forming in the body. Exactly what you do not want, so ditch them altogether and forever!
Lemons
If you need a refreshing cold drink that is actually healthy, you can make it yourself real easily. Just take a bottle of water, add the juice of a lemon to it and give it a shake, then put it in the fridge.
Easy peasy! Refreshing lemon drink that tastes pretty nice and the major benefit is that lemon juice is one of the best alkalizing juices you can drink!
I am not joking!
Lemons, while being acidic in their natural state become alkaline during the digestive process. I would recommend you consume one or more lemons every day in one way or another and don't be surprised at how your health improves, your weight normalizes and your energy levels increase!
Conclusion
If you decide you want to take back control over your health and start eating to boost your body's healthfulness, then I do recommend you look to eating more alkalizing foods and avoiding the unhealthy, acidifying ones as well as the drinks that really no one should ever be consuming. Ever.
You can limit what you eat to things that are still extremely enjoyable and tasty while letting go of the old stuff that was slowing killing you and feel great about yourself once more. Life is for living and when you can do it in good health, you have everything you need!
